Gilbert & George – The Early Years
Gilbert & George met as students at St. Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967. In the decades that followed they became two of the most significant and distinctive artists working anywhere in the world. In 2015, MoMA in New York staged an exhibition focused on their formative early years, tracing the period from 1969 to 1975 during which they established the ideology that continues to shape their vision today.
MoMA invited STROMA to make a film to accompany the exhibition. Gilbert & George welcomed us into their home and studio at Fournier Street in London where they handled and responded to some of their earliest pieces, their memories of the work surfacing naturally in conversation. What emerged felt much less like a filmed interview than something altogether more personal.
